2.6 Hormonal Control/ The Endocrine System Flashcards
What does the endocrine system allow the body to maintain?
maintain stable body conditions by allowing the body to respond to external and internal changes
what is the endocrine system made up of?
glands that release hormones
where is the thyroid gland and what does it produce?
neck
-thyroxine controls rate of chemical processes(metabolic rate)
where is the adrenal gland and what does it produce?
next to kidneys produces adrenaline which speeds up heart rate and increases blood flow to muscles and gets the body ready for emergency action
where are the ovaries and what hormone do they produce?
sex cells - oestrogen controls body changes during puberty and men’s trial cycle
where is the pituitary gland and what does it produce?
centre of the brain
produces growth hormone which controls body’s use of carbs, proteins and fats and makes liver produce another hormone affecting bone and muscle growth
what are hormones?
chemical messengers transported in the blood stream
what do hormones affect?
only certain target cells/tissues
what do target cells have to receive hormones?
hormone receptors on the surface
Are hormone receptors specific?
ya
what regulates the glucose level in the blood and where is it produced?
hormones glucose and glucagon produced in pancreas
how does insulin regulate blood glucose levels?
increase in bgc so pancreas produces more insulin which tells liver to absorb more glucose and turn it into glycogen so less glucose in blood
how does glucagon regulate blood glucose levels?
decrease in bgc so pancreas makes more glucagon which tells liver to breakdown more glycogen to glucose so more glucose in blood
what is glycogen and where is it found?
an animals storage carbohydrate found in liver
