1.5 Respiration Flashcards
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration with oxygen.
What is glucose?
Chemical energy.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration without oxygen.
What is respiration?
The process through which living organisms release energy from their food.
What is the summary equation for respiration?
glucose + oxygen —> Carbon dioxide + water + energy(ATP)
How is the chemical energy in glucose released?
Through a series of enzyme controlled reactions.
Describe aerobic respiration…
glucose breaks down into two pyruvate and then through a series of enzyme comtrolled reactions to make carbon dioxide and water. Energy is released at each stage which goes on to convert ADP and phosphate into ATP. The first stage happens in the cytoplasm and makes two ATP. The second stage takes place in the mitochondria and makes 36 ATP.
Describe anaerobic respiration in animals..
Glucose is broken down into two pyruvate in the cytoplasm making two ATP. Then it is broken down into lactic acid in the cytoplasm which is toxic to animals.
Describe anaerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells…
Glucose is broken down into two pyruvate in the cytoplasm making two ATP. This is then broken down into carbon dioxide and ethanol in the cytoplasm. Ethanol is toxic to plant cells. Also called fermentation.
