5. Sensory Organs Flashcards
Somatosensory system
Specialized receptor cells primarily in the skin that respond to tactile stimuli sending to the parietal lobe.
Palperbr-
Pertaining to the eyelid

Phac-
Pertaining to the lens of the eye
Scot-
Pertains to Darkness
Ametropia
Eye refractive power defect
Chalazion
Granuloma around a sebaceous gland on the eyelid
Cycloplegia
Paralysis of the ciliary muscle
Dacryocystitis
Inflammation and obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct
Dacryostenosis
Narrowing of the lacrimal duct
Ectropian
Outward eyelid eversion
Entropian
Eyelid inward inversion
Enucleation
Removal of an organ from a body cavity
Episclera
Connective tissue covering of the sclera
Exenteration
Radical excision; removal of an organ in one-piece
Esophthalmos
Anterior protrusion of the eyeball out of the orbit
Hordeolum
Infection of eyelash root on the eyelid; stye
Nystagmus
Rapid, involuntary eye movements, Indicates brain tumor, inner ear condition or adverse reaction to medication
Papilledema
Swelling of the optic disk
Ptosis
Drooping of the upper eyelid
Tarsorrhaphy
Suturing of eyelids together
Tonometer
Instrument measuring intraocular pressure
Trichiasis
Ingrown eyelashes
Uveal
Vascular tissue of choroid, ciliary body and iris
Xanthelasma
Lipid disorder; yellow plaque on the eyelid
Open angle galucoma
The trabecular mesh work does not drain adequately. It is chronic, with slower onset.
Closed Angle Glaucoma
Iris is squeezed against the cornea, block the drainage of aqueous humor. Acute, painful.
Drugs used to treat glaucoma
Pilocarpine, prostaglandines, beta blockers
Phacoemulsification
Common cataract treatment, ultrasonic device used to break up the old lens.
Extracapsular Cataract Surgery
Incision allows for the entire lens to be removed in on piece. The posterior half of the lens’ out covering is left in place
Intracapsular Cataract Survery
Rarely performed; Entire lens and capsule are removed through one large incision.
Macular Degeneration
Destruction of the Fovea Centralis of the Macula; central field of vision is lost.
Wet macular degeneration
blood or fluid leaks into the macula. Photocoagulation therapy is used to to seal the blood vessels.
Dry macular degeneration
Atrophy and deterioration of the macula; no known treatment
Pneumatic Retinopexy
Treats medium to large retinal tears. Surgeon uses a gas bubble and freezing device to seal the retina to the choroid.
Salping-
Eustachian tube
Apicectomy
Excision of portion of temporal bone
Aural Tresia
Congenital absence of external auditory canal
Cerumen
Earwax
Cholesteatoma
Abnormal, noncancerous grown that forms in the middle ear
Exostosis
Bony overgrowth in the ear canal
Macrotia
Condition of having abnormally large ears
Ossicles
Bones of the middle ear (malleus, incus, stapes)
Otophyorrhea
Pus drainage from the ear
Stapedectomy
Replacement of the steps with a prosthesis
Tympanolysis
Removal of tympanic membrane adhesions
Tympanostomy Tube Placement
Relieve fluid buildup around the tympanic membrane
Organ of Corti
Housed in the cochlea; transduce mechanical sound vibrations into electrical impulses to the temporal lobe
Vestibular system contains …
Cochlea, labyrinth of the inner ear and the semicircular canals
Conductive hearing loss
Defect in sound conducting apparatus: scar tissue, otitis media or otoslerosis
Sensorineual hearing lost
Lesion on the cochlea or central neural pathway
Ototoxic hearing loss
Ingesting toxins that damage the inner ear
Meniere’s Disease
Also known as idiopathic endolymphatic hydrops; disturbance of the inner ear due to increased hydraulic pressure.
Nociception
Perception of pain
Hyperalgesia
Abnormally heightened sensitivity to pain
Hyposthesia
Numbness
Anosmia
Loss of smell
Dysosmia
Distortion of smells
Parosmia
All substances smell bad
Phantosmia
Smelling things that aren’t there
-geusia
Taste
Ageusia
Lack of sense of taste
Dysgeusia
Distorted sense of taste
Hyogeusia
Decreased sense of taste
Vallate papillae
located at the back of the tongue with 50% o f the tastebuds
Foliate Papillae
On the sides of the tongue’s posterior with several hundred tastebuds
Filiform papillae
have mechanoreceptors, but no tastebuds
