5 Self study Flashcards
What is meant by the term ‘pulmonary embolism’?
An occlusion of a pulmonary artery caused by a fragment of
thrombosis carried through the blood stream
Where might the pulmonary embolism come from?
DVT
What will happen to heart if blood
flow through the pulmonary circulation is compromised?
Pressure in the right would increase, blood flow to the left would be reduced, diastolic pressure would fall, stroke volume and cardiac output would fall
What would happen to the pressure in the atriums in a pulmonary embolism?
Right would increase
Left would decrease
What will be the pressure in the pulmonary artery?
higher than normal
What would happen to the jugular venous pressure?
Will be increased
What would happen to the cardiac output?
Reduced
In a case of mechanical shock what branch of the ANS will be acticated
sympathetic
How do you detect poor perfusion at the periphery?
Bluish discolouration
What is the term used when fluid accumulates rapidly in the
pericardial sac and compresses the heart?
Cardiac Tamponade
In Cardiac Tamponade, what will happen to the diastolic filling of the heart and why?
There will be reduced filling of the ventricles in diastole as
they are compressed by the surrounding pericardial fluid
In Cardiac Tamponade, what will happen to the CVP?
Raised because the heart cannot fill therefore there is a blood build up in the venous system?
In cardiac tamponade, what happens to the pulmonary artery pressure?
Pulmonary artery pressure is raised because blood cannot
empty properly from the pulmonary veins into the left atrium.
In cardiac tamponade, left atrial pressure?
Raised due to compression of the heart
In cardiac tamponade, cardiac output?
Reduced because the heart cannot pump adequately
