1 CVS Haemodynamics Flashcards
What are the resistance vessels?
Arterioles and pre capillary sphincters
What are the capacitance vessels?
The veins, a store of blood that can be called upon to cope with temporary imbalance between the amount of blood returning to the heart and the amount required to pump out
What is the difference between plasma and serum?
Fluid collected from unclotted blood is called plasma
Fluid collected from clotted blood is called serum
What is peripheral resistance?
The resistance of the arteries to blood flow, as arteries constrict the resistance increases, as they dilate, resistance decreases.
What are the two types of blood flow in the body?
Turbulence and laminar
What is turbulent flow?
Blood flows in all directions and mixes within the vessel, can be described as chaotic, occurs when passes a rough surface or there is an increased resistance to blood flow
What is pulse pressure?
Peak Systolic pressure - end diastolic pressure
120mmhg - 80mmHg = 40mmHg
How can the mean arterial pressure be estimated?
Diastolic pressure + 1/3 of the pulse pressure
80mmHg + 13mmHg
What is the strength of a pulse determined by?
- the force the left ventricle is able to eject blood
- the pulse pressure - the greater the pulse pressure the stronger the pulse?
What do the words thread and bounding mean?
Thready - a weak pulse
Bounding - a strong pulse
