4 Self Study Flashcards
If you gave an individual an injection of adrenaline, what would be the cardiorespiratory effects?
Increase in heart rate, stroke volume and so cardiac output
The arterioles would vasoconstrict (through the action of the alpha1 receptors)
The airways would dilate (through the action of the beta2 receptors)
What does an individual with a high circulating level of adrenaline look like to an outside observer?
- anxious
- Sweaty
- Pale
- Dilate pupils
What would you give to someone suffering form anaphylaxis?
Adrenaline, reverses the anaphylaxis symptoms, adrenaline leads to constriction of blood vessels and dilation of airways
What are the effects of drugs than antagonise the action of noradrenaline?
- Arteriolar vasodilation
- Reduced blood pressure leading to postural hypotension
- Initial increase in heart rate mediated by baroreceptor reflex
- Relaxed GI and urinary sphincters
An increase in sympathetic flow to the heart will
increase heart rate and stroke volume
An increase in parasympathetic flow to the heart will
decrease heart rate
Sympathetic control of the heart is via
Cardiac nerves
Parasympathetic control of the heart is via
the vagus nerves
What adrenoreceptors are found on the heart
beta 1
Smooth muscle in blood vessels is under the control of which branch of the autonomic system?
Sympathetic
