5-Mitosis, meiosis and chromosome abnormalities Flashcards
What are the main features of a chromosome?
Sister chromatids
Centromere
Euchromatin
Heterochromatin
How many pairs of chromosomes do we have and what are they made up of?
23 pairs
Made up of 44 autosomes and 2 sex chromosomes
46 chromosomes in total
What is a chromosomal abnormality?
Change in Chromosome number structure or something that happens during meiosis
What is the role of telomeres?
Help prevent damage
What are nucleosomes?
DNA wrapped around eight histone proteins
What is chromatin?
Network of DNA and proteins that make up chromsomes during interphase
What is heterochromatin?
Highly condensed and genetically inactive- mainly at centromeres
What is euchromatin?
Lighter staining relatively open structure where genes may be accessed and are active. Includes protein coding genes
What is a telomere?
Cap at the end of chromosome
What is a centromere?
1/ chr. Position on chr where 2 sister chromatids are joined
What is the p arm of a chromosome?
Short arm of the chromosome
What is the q arm of a chromosome?
Long arm of the chromosome
What is an autosome?
Any chromosome that is not a sex chromsome
How are chromosomes classified?
Based on the position of the centromere
Size
Banding pattern
What is mitosis?
The process of somatic cell division
