11-Multifactorial Diseases Flashcards
What is the difference between Mendelian and complex multifactorial diseases
Mendelian- Directly result in a genetic condition
Complex/multifactorial - Differences in response to diet/medication
Influence likelihood of disease
What are chromosome abnormalities?
Deletions, rearrangements, translocations which can be identified microscopically.
Variations in chromosome number and smaller structural changes
What is meant by multifactorial/polygenic/complex disorders?
Involves other genes or factors such as enviroment
What are the causes of incomplete penetrance?
Genotypes so not act in isolation.
Interaction with other loci
Interaction with the environment
Chance/Serendipity
What are single gene disorders caused by?
Primarily caused by genetic variation within a single gene or localised gene region.
Often modified by additional genes/environment
