1936 - Radio broadcasts strengthened participation in football and helped it to develop its audience
Why did sports stadia close during WW2 and how long did this last?
Due to fears of being bombed. Demand led to them reopening. Military able to form highly talented teams.
What form did sports taking during WW2?
Sports tended to take the form of charity games during the war: May 1943 - 55,000 attended a football match at Chelsea which raised £8000 for charity.
Who were tourist facilities geared towards in 1918?
Few WC people took holidays. Geared towards the UC e.g pricey seaside hotels, spa resorts and leisure facilities such as golf courses.
What was a popular holiday venture among the UC in 1918?
Sailing - people went to seaside resorts for the good of their health
Where did the UC go if they went abroad in 1918?
Few people went abroad and tended to go to exclusive locations like the French Riviera or for tours of art galleries and museums in Italy and Greece.

Boarding Houses - 4000 of them in Blackpool in 1920s, became less attractive as disposable income increased

First one in Skegness in 1936, promised a holiday for a weeks wages, declined in 1970s as holiday goers wanted a more individual experience and foreign holidays grew
What happened when Butlins marketed to teenagers?
Butlins tried marketing to teenagers during their decline = scandals of teenage sex, drinking, vandalism and antisocial behaviour ruined reputation
Why were caravans popular in 1934?
90 models of caravan, as living standards rose, more people bought caravans. Caravanning possible due to increase in car ownership and growth in suburban living with more homes having driveways.
How did horse carriages decline after WW1?
Shift from horse drawn carriages, 200,000 in 1923 and 12,000 in 1937

As town and city councils switched to buses instead
