A

Due to seamen, labourers and soldiers being stationed in GB Isles during the war. ⅓ of GB manpower in WW1 made up of black and Asian colonial troops and labourers

A

White workers attempted to stop black and Asian workers taking GB jobs. Discrimination as whites tended to view black and Asian people as inferior and not entitled to equal rights.

What was the Alien Orders Act 1920?

A

Required migrant workers to register with the police before seeking work. Aliens who failed to comply would be punished by deportation. Police only applied the law to black and Asian people. Many branded as aliens were GB citizens.

A

Forced coloured seamen to prove their GB citizenship to immigration authorities or face deportation. Assumed coloured seamen were non GB.

A

Fought racism, established the International African Opinion newspaper, encouraged readers to lobby their MPs for minority rights. Specifically for healthcare and shopping facilities.

A

Universities educated 50 West Africans, 150 Caribbeans and 100 approx from India in interwar period.

What had the gov hoped for minorities after WW1?

A

Hoped they would return to colonies to serve the Empire as senior administrators. Students from colonies not expected to stay in GB and work in elite positions in GB gov.

A

to support immigrant students to gain equal rights. Harold Moody - studied medicine in 1904, refused from all hospitals
