What did class determine in 1900?
Status and place in society
What were the four main class groups in 1918?
Industrial working classes - manual labour
Lower middle classes - workers in semi skilled jobs
Middle classes - professionals; doctors, lawyers
Upper classes - inherited wealth
How did the high death toll of WW1 lead to a decline in deference?
Shook confidence of UC generals in WW1 in WC. Life in trenches resulted in MC men interacting with WC men.
What did it mean for the UC that their death toll in WW1 had been disproportionately high?
Families forced to pay death duties. Elder sons had to sell their land or stately homes to pay for these.
In 1914, less than 10% of those working the land owned it, how did this change?
Rose to 33% by 1930
What happened when aristocrats couldn’t afford their homes after WW1?
Sold to National Trust, sold as schools or hotels or fell into disrepair. Not all e.g Duke of Portland still owned 8 grand houses in 1914 and maintained them until 1939
Why was there a more democratic society as a result of WW1?
1918 ROTP
People in work could improve their living standards, prices fell faster than wages in Great Depression.
Why did the gov fear a widespread revolt in Clydeside in 1919?
Long term economic factors and changing WC attitudes
How did the MC feel towards the general strike compared to The Times in 1926?
While The Times slated the general strike, some MC sympathised with them
Why did strikes tend to decline in 1920?
Little class conflict, Conservatives enjoyed widespread MC and WC support
What impact did the Great Depression have?
Undermined WC solidarity, TU membership declined, affluence in Midlands and South East, Wales and Tyneside badly affected
