Heat intolerance Lack of acclimatization Physical exertion/ physically unfit Allergies, illness, infection Sickle cell Elderly Thyroid disorder Medication use Prescribed MAOI or SSRI Use of ecstacy, LSD, PCP, Cocaine Recent general anesthesia

Pertinent Physical Findings
A
Normal mental status Headache, nausea, vomiting Malaise, muscle cramps, exhaustion Tachypnea, tachycardia, normotension Shivering Hypotension AMS Bizarre behavior, combative Syncope, seizure, coma

A
Heat cramps Heat exhaustion Heat stroke Thyroid storm Excited delirium Malignant hyperthermia AEIOUTIPS

Emergency Stabilization
A
Remove from heat, shade and expose, wet with tepid water and encourage evaporation but avoid shivering, use air conditioning
Obtain baseline temp
Obtain BGL
Cool NS bolus
Cold packs to neck, groin, armpits reassessing temp frequently

BHO for heat illness
A
Albuterol for suspected hyperkalemia associated with heat illness
Calcium chloride for suspected hyperkalemia associated with heat illness
Midazolam for shivering associated with heat illness
Bicarb for suspected rhabdomyolysis and or hyperkalemia associated with heat illness
