What is Parkinson’s disease?
A
A degenerative disorder of the CNS mainly affecting the motor system. Caused by death of dopamine-generating cells in the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia.

Symptoms
A
Early: Shaking, rigidity, slowness of move. and difficulty with walking and gait.
Later: Thinking and behavioral problems, dementia, and depression

Diagnosis
A
Neurological history and performs an exam.
No standard diagnostic tests
Good response to levodopa, CT/MRI to rule out other causes

Treatment
A
- Drugs ↑dopamine: AMANTADINE, LEVODOPA + CARBIDOPA, RASAGILINE, SELEGILINE
- Dopamine rcpt agonists: APOMORPHINE, BROMOCRIPTINE, ROPINIROLE
- Cholinergic rcpt antagonists: BENZTROPINE, TRIHEXYPHENIDYL
