Self Confidence in Sport
Confidence results from the comparison an athlete makes between their goal and their ability
When confident they can turn sporting potential into superior performance
Confidence
Is a necessary ingredient to all successful performances including learning a new skill
People who lack confidence have negative thoughts lots of doubts about their adequacy and ultimately perform poorly
Confident performers have positive thoughts clear focus and often have high levels of performance
Self Confidence - Definition
Is a persons belief in themselves and their abilities
Self Efficacy in Sport
Is a situation form of self confidence or the belief that one is confident and can perform within a specific situation
Value / importance
This relates to the value or importance placed in a given task
This can impact a person self efficacy within a particular activity
High Self efficacy traits
It is optimal to have positive self efficacy and high outcome expectations
Under these circumstances they are more likely to feel confident apply themselves and be persistent in the face of difficulty
People with high self efficacy traits generally try harder and persist longer
Low self efficacy traits
With low self efficacy attaining highly desired goals leads to worry, anxiety and even depression
People with low SE in a situation will avoid the activity and give up after initial unsuccessful attempt
Relationship between self efficacy and sport performance
Consistent success has been linked to complacency and overconfidence
Successful people often reduce their attention because they have no need change their strategies or standards
Some self doubt is useful in preparatory situations because it provides the incentive to focus and expend effort to acquire knowledge and skills
