Goal Setting
Goals are aims or targets which give our efforts direction and purpose
Goals have been shown to increase work output by 40-50%
Types of Goals
Process
Performance
Outcome
Short and long term
Performance goals
Provide means to improve our performance and take us to a level which may well see us achieve a desired result
They provide structure for each training session period year and career. As we achieve them we move a step closer to other goals which may be performance and result related
Outcome goals
Outcome goals focus on the end point of an event. For example a competitive result such as winning a specific event. Achieving these goals depends not only on an athletes own effort but also on the ability of their opponent
Process goals
Are specific actions or processes of performing. Process goals are 100% controllable by the individual
Short term goal
Is a goal you want to achieve in the near future. 12 months or less
Long term goals
Is a goal you want to achieve in the future. Long term goals are typically a several year process, often requiring many steps to achieve
SMART goals
S - specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable, agreed, action oriented
R - Realistic
T - Timely
E - Evaluate
R - Reviewed
Benefits of goal setting
Goals enhance focus and concentration
Improves performance by focussing attention in important elements of the skill being performed
Goals boost self confidence
Goals help creat a positive mental attitude
Goal setting improves performance by encouraging perseverance and contributing towards a positive psychological state
Goals increase intrinsic motivation to excel
The goal that is valued and considered worthwhile will provide the spur needed to overcome tiredness, boredom and poor disappointment.
