40A - Lab - Exercise #14 Flashcards
Origin
Muscle tendon that is attached to the stationary bone
Insertion
Muscle tendon that is attached to the bone that moves when the muscle contracts
Flexion
Decrease in the angle of a joint
Extension
Increase in the angle of a joint
Abductor muscle
Moves an appendage away to midline
Adductor muscle
Moves an appendage closer to the mindline
Orbicularis Oculi
Action: Closes eye
Orbicularis Oris
Action: Closes mouth
Sternocleidomastoid
Origin: Sternum and clavicle
Insertion: Mastoid process of temporal
Action: One muscle (R/L) contracting laterally flexes head AND rotates head to opposite side and both muscles contracting will flex head forward
Platyzma
Part of muscle that attaches to skin in neck
Pectoralis Major
“Chest”
External Oblique
Action: One muscle (R/L) contracting laterally bends torso side to side (as in saying no) AND both muscles contracting will flex the vertebral column and contract the abdominal muscles
Rectus Abdominis
Origin: Pubic symphysis and pubic crest
Insertion: Costal cartilage of ribs and xiphoid process of sternum
Action: Flexes vertebral column AND compress the abdomen with contraction (used for sit ups)
External Intercostals
Superficial; Between ribs
Action: Raises ribs at inhalation, increase thoracic cavity size
Internal Intercostals
Inner muscles
Action: Lowers ribs at exhalation; decrease thoracic cavity size
Diaphragm
Separates the thoracic cavity from abdominal cavity
3 Openings in diaphragm
Esophageal Hiatus, Aortic Hiatus, Caval Opening
Opening in diaphragm for esophagus
Esophageal Hiatus
Opening in diaphragm for abdominal aorta
Aortic Hiatus
Opening in diaphragm for inferior vena cava
Caval Opening
Trapezius
“Top portion of back” (Excludes shoulders)
Deltoid
“Shoulder”
Latissimus dorsi
“Lower portion of back”
Biceps brachii
Postion: Anterior
Origin: 2 tendons of origin both on scapula
Insertion: Radius (proximal)
Action: Flexes forearm at elbow joint AND flexes arm at shoulder joint
Brachialis
Position: Anterior, beneath biceps brachii
Origin: Humerus (proximal)
Insertion: Ulna (proximal)
Action: Flexes forearm at elbow joint
Triceps brachii
Postion: Posterior
Origin: Humerus (proximal) AND scapula
Insertion: Ulna (proximal)
Action: Extends forearm at elbow joint
Brachioradialis
Postion: Anterior, lateral
Origin: Humerus (distal)
Insertion: Radius (distal)
Action: Flexes forearm at elbow joint
Flexor carpi radialis
Position: Anterior
Origin: Humerus (passes over radius)
Insertion: Metacarpals
Action: Flexes hand at wrist joint
Extensor carpi radialis
Position: Posterior
Origin: Humerus (passes over radius)
Insertion: Metacarpals
Action: extends hand at wrist joint
Specific neurotransmitter for muscles
Acetylcholine
Rectus Femoris
Origin: Ilium of coxal bone
Insertion: Patella AND tibial tuberosity
Action: Flex the thigh at the hip bone
Vastus lateralis / Vastus medialis
Origin: Femur
Insertion: Patella and tibial tuberosity
Action: Extend the leg at the knee
Vastus intermedius
Origin: Femur (*deep to rectus femoris)
Insertion: Patella and tibial tuberosity
Action: Extend the leg at the knee
Semitendinosus
*TOP MUSCLE
Origin: Ischial tuberosity
Action: Flexes the leg at the knee AND extends thigh at the hip to move leg backward
Semimembranosus
*MEDIAL IN POSITION
Origin: Ischial tuberosity
Action: Flexes the leg at the knee AND extends thigh at the hip to move backward
Biceps femoris
*MORE LATERAL IN POSITION
Origin: Ischial tuberosity
Action: Flexes the leg at the knee AND extends thigh at the hip to move backward
Sartorius
Action: Flexes the leg at the knee AND flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates thigh at the hip to allow us to sit with legs crossed
Gluteus Maximus
Action: Extends thigh at the hip to move leg backward AND rotates thigh laterally
Gracilis
Action: Adducts thigh AND medially rotates thigh AND flexes leg at the knee
Tibialis anterior
Origin: Tibia
Insertion: Metatarsals
Action: Dorsiflexes foot at ankle joint
Gastrocnemius
Origin: Lateral AND medial condyle of femur
Insertion: Calcaneus by calcaneal tendon
Action: Flexes leg at knee joint (point feet)
Soleus
Position: Beneath the gastronemius
Calcaneal Tendon
Achilles tendon
