4. Direct Restorations Flashcards
List 5 reasons why we restore teeth:
- To allow lesion to become cleansable
- To relieve pain in reversible pulpitis
- To allow the pulpal dentinal complex to heal
- To prevent the development of carious lesions
- To restore function, form and aesthetics
What are the 3 principles of caries removal?
- Remove all unsupported enamel leaving a sound enamel margin.
- Remove all dark, soft carious dentine.
- Carious dentine overlaying the pulp can be left if tooth is symptomless and their is a peripheral seal
List the 3 main restorative materials used for direct restoration’s:
Amalgam
Composite
Glass Ionomer
What should you assess if deep caries is suspected?
Restoarability
Symptoms
Sensibility tests
TTP test
Radiographs
What are the treatment options for irreversible pulpitis/a necrotic pulp?
RCT or XLA
What should be done if the tooth has reversible pulpitis or a healthy pulp?
Selective caries removal of dentine without pulp exposure and a peripheral sealing restoration
How does selective caries removal work?
Bacteria is sealed under the restoration with a good peripheral seal and is denied any substrate and the lesion arrests. In addition it also allows the pulpal dentinal complex to lay down reparative dentine.
