4 Flashcards
7 Attitudes of Science
determinism, experimentation, parsimony, replication, philosophic doubt, empiricism, and pragmatism
Determinism
The universe is a lawful and orderly place in which all phenomena occurs as the result of other events.
Experimentation
Repeatedly measuring event in the presence and absence of variable
Parsimony
Rule out simple explanations before moving towards complicated explanations
Replication
Science is self correcting and findings must be verified
Philosophic Doubt
Continually question the truthfulness of what is regarded as fact
Empiricism
Objectively observe phenomenon of interest
Pragmatism
Theories are assessed by observing effect on behavior
Fixed Ratio
schedule of reinforcement requiring a specified number of responses for reinforcement; response rate is high and long pauses between bursts
Variable Ratio
schedule of reinforcement requiring a varying number of responses of an average number for reinforcement; response rate is high and consistent
Fixed Interval
schedule of reinforcement in which the interval of time that must pass before reinforcement becomes possible is always the same; response rate is low to moderate with a gradual increasing rate
Variable Interval
schedule of reinforcement in which the interval of time that must pass before reinforcement becomes possible varies to equal an average interval; response rate is low to moderate and consistent
