3.7 Flashcards
Jorge / Regina
The equation to find the total magnification of a specimen
magnification of objective lens* magnification of eyepiece lens
The equation to find the actual size of a specimen
actual size= image size/magnification
Why is staining used?
To make it easier to identify types of cell or parts of cells under the microscope
Name four stains that may be used to identify part of cells
1) Hematoxylin
2) Methylene blue
3) Acetocarmine
4) Iodine
What parts of the cells does the 4 stains stain?
1) Hematoxylin- stains the nuclei of plant and animal cells purple, blue or ibrown
2) Methylene blue- Stains the nuclei of animal cells blue
3) Acetocarmine- Stains the chromosomes in dividing nuclei in both plant and animal cells
4) Iodine- Stains starch-containing material in plant cells blue-black
What are the two features of any microscope that determine how clear the image is?
Magnification and resolution
What is magnification?
Is a measure of how much bigger the image you see is when compared to the real object
What is resolution?
Is a measure of how far apart two objects must be before we see them separately
