3.3, 3.4, 3.6 Flashcards
Virginia, Monishka, Mads
What is a nucleus?
an organelle that controls the activities of the cell, has a double membrane with pores
Role of the rough endoplasmic reticulum
it produces, processes, and transports proteins
What is a nucleolus?
An extra dense area of almost pure DNA and protein,
are involved in the production of ribosomes.
What are ribosomes?
where protein synthesis occurs, made of 2 subunits
What is smooth endoplasmic reticulum?
smooth: without the ribsome,
involved in synthesis and transport of steroids and lipids in the cell.
What is its rough endoplasmic reticulum´s role?
producing transmembrane proteins for its membrane and for many other cell components including lysosomes, secretory vesicles
Location of RER
In the cytoplasm
What is the structure of the Golgi apparatus?
A series of flat membrane-bound sacs (cristernae)
What is the function of Golgi apparatus?
Golgi apparatus are specialized for receiving the molecules of substances secreted by the endoplasmic reticulum across a group of transporting vesicles.
It also processes and packages new lipids and proteins and makes lysosomes.
Molecules are released in vesicles.
What do mitochondria do?
Site of aerobic respiration (makes ATP).
What is the structure of a mitochondrion
has a double membrane, the inner membrane is highly folded. Contains its own DNA (loop) and ribosomes (small/ 70s).
What is the sub-organelle of the nucleus
Nucleolus
What is rough endoplasmic reticulum?
rough: is covered with 80s ribsomoes and which is involved in the production and transport of protein.
