3.13 Flashcards
Lucas, Cris
What is pollination?
The transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma, often from one flower to another.
what is external fertilisation?
The process of the fertilisation in which the female and male gametes are released outside the of the parental bodies to meet and fuse in the environment.
what is internal fertilisation?
The fertilisation of the female gamete by the male gamete, which takes place inside the body of the female.
what is germination?
The process by which a pollen tube starts to grow out of the pollen grain to transfer the male nuclei to the ovule.
what are the female parts of the flower called?
Carpel (stigma, style, ovary)
What are the male parts of the flower called?
Stamen (anther, filament)
What is double fertilisation?
The process that occurs in plants in which one male nucleus fuses with the two polar nuclei to form the triploid (3n) endosperm nucleus and the other fuses with the egg cell nucleus to form the diploid (2n) zygote.
what is pollen germination? When does it happen?
The process by which a pollen tube starts to grow out of the pollen grain to transfer the male nuclei to the ovule.
It grows only if its of the same plant species.
what is a acrosome reaction?
The reaction when the sperm reach the oocyte and the enzymes are released from the acrosome and they digest the follicle cells and the zona pellucida.
what is the cortical reaction?
the reaction is when the cortical granules in the cytoplasm of the ovum release enzymes into the zona pellucida. These enzymes destroy the sperm-binding sites and also thicken and harden the jelly the zone pellucida.
what does the first male gamete do?
the first male gamete fuses with the female gamete nucleus and produces a diploid zygote.
what is fertilisation?
is when the male and female nuclei fuse.
Where are hydrolytic enzymes released from and why?
The tip of the pollen tube, so that a path is made through the style. Also the digested tissue acts as a nutrient source for the pollen tube as it grows.
When does the generative nucleus divide and how does it divide?
As it travels down the pollen tube, it divides by mitosis just before entering the ovary
