Previous stage to mitosis
Interphase
Mitosis phases
1) Prophase
2) Metaphase
3) Anaphase
4) Telophase
5) Cytokinesis
Describe the first phase
PROPHASE
Genetic material replicates to produce exact copies of the original chromosomes.
Describe the second phase
METAPHASE
Nuclear membrane has broken down. Centrioles have formed between them a spindle (set of microtubules). Chromatids (chromosones) line up along the metaphase plate (equator).
Describe the third phase
ANAPHASE
Centromeres split so two identical linked chromatids become new separate chromosomes. Chromatids have been separated to opposite sides of the cell, moved by microtubules of the spindle.
Describe the fourth phase
TELOPHASE
Spindle fibres break down and nuclear envelopes (which is visible) form around the two sets of chromosomes, which uncoil and become invisible.
