3.5 - Symbiosis Flashcards
define symbiosis
co-evolved intimate relationships between members of 2 different species
name the 2 types of symbiosis
mutualism
parasitism
in what terms does a parasite benefit from a symbiotic relationship?
energy and nutrients
what is the benefit of a parasitic relationship to the host?
got u there… there is none -read following in high speed, terms and conditions style- (required for the SQA higher biology course according to the course specification available on the SQA website)……comedy…..f#ck me im bored ):
Why can a parasite often not survive long out of contact with a source?
it has a limited metabolism
what 3 methods transmit parasites to new hosts?
direct contact, resistant stages, vectors-They are not pajamas!
how do resistant stages work?
parasites use resistant larvae/pupae, which can survive adverse environmental conditions until a new host comes in contact
how does a vector work?
parasite uses another species to transfer them from one host to another
name the vector of malaria
mosquito
why do some parasites need an intermediate(secondary) host?
to allow them to complete their life cycle
what is a mutualistic relationship?
a symbiotic relationship in which both species benefit from the relationship
