drowsiness and a depressed state of consciousness resembling natural sleep, with decreased motor activity and impaired sensory responsiveness, pt can be easily aroused
anesthesia
state of consciousness where pt cannot easily be aroused

GABA
Rohypnol (Flunitrazepam)
date rape drug, not prescribed in US
antagonist at benzodiazepine-binding sites at GABA A receptor that acts as an antidote to benzos
FLumazenil
BB warning for Flumazenil
seizures, esp in pts who have been on long-term sedation or were txed with TCAs
taper rate when tapering a pt off of benzos
25-50% every 1-2 weeks, for 6-10 weeks
two options for tapering benzos
- directly taper the benzo the pt is on
2. switch to a long-acting replacement to complete the taper
