3.5 Flashcards
What is symbiosis?
Any interaction between two different species
What are the two types of symbiosis
Parasitism
Mutualism
Describe parasitism
The parasite benefits off its host by obtaining energy and nutrients.
The host is harmed.
Limited metabolism as it relies on host to keep it alive
Describe mutualism
Interdependent since two species are mutually dependent upon each other
Types of transmission of parasites
Direct contact
Release of resistant stages
Vectors
What is direct contact
A parasite passed by physical contact
What is the release of resistant stages
Able to survive adverse conditions until contact with new host
Describe a vector
Carries a disease from human to human
What are the two types of parasitic life cycles
Direct and indirect
Describe the direct parasitic life cycle
Eggs shed and passed onto new member of host species
Describe indirect parasitic life cycle
Primary host species is site for sex and parasite becomes adapted to employ a secondary host and allows immature parasites to complete life cycle
