3.3 Memory Flashcards
1
Q
What is the order of memory that information passes through?
A
- Sensory Memory
- STM
- LTM
2
Q
What does sensory information do?
A
Lasts only a few seconds and holds visual images and auditory sounds
3
Q
What happens to information if it is not passed to LTM from STM?
A
Will be lost by displacement or decay
4
Q
What is Rehearsal (STM)?
A
- Items can be maintained within the STM for longer periods of time
- Repeating a piece of information several times
- Helps transfer to LTM
5
Q
What is chunking (STM)?
A
- The organisation of many pieces of information into smaller chunks
- Breaking down phone numbers
- Increases capacity of STM
6
Q
What is Serial Position Effect (STM)?
A
- When information is viewed in a sequence, the first and last few pieces of information are remembered best
- First pieces are remembered as there has been enough time for rehearsal and gets transferred to LTM
- Middle pieces are forgotten about as STM is crowded
- Last pieces of information is remembered because they are fresh in the STM
7
Q
How can information be transferred from STM to LTM?
A
- Rehearsal
- Organisation
- Elaboration
8
Q
What is organisation (LTM)?
A
Organising information into logical groups or categories makes it more easily transferable into the LTM
9
Q
What is elaboration?
A
Elaboration allows us to make information easier to transfer and store by building it into a bigger story
