3.2 The Cerebral Cortex Flashcards
What is the cerebral cortex?
The centre of conscious thought
What does the cerebral cortex do?
It recalls memories and alters behaviour in the light of experience
What are the three key functions of the cerebral cortex?
- Receives sensory information
- Co-ordinates voluntary movement
- Making decisions based on experience
What are the main areas of the cerebral cortex?
- Sensory Area
- Association Area
- Motor Area
What does the sensory area do?
Receives information as sensory impulses from receptors
What does the association area do?
Analyse and interpret impulses received from the sensory areas and deals with thought processes, language, personality, imagination and intelligence
What does the motor area do?
Acts on information from association areas by sending motor impulses to effectors
What are the cerebral hemispheres connected by?
A bundle of nerve fibres known as the corpus callosum
