1.7 Respiration Flashcards
What is phosphorylation?
An enzyme controlled process by which a phosphate group is added to a molecule
What are the 3 stages of Respiration?
1 - Glycolysis
2 - Citric Acid Cycle
3 - Electron Transport Chain
Where does Glycolysis take place?
The cytoplasm
Does glycolysis require oxygen?
No
What is glucose broken down into?
An intermediate compound
What is an intermediate compound broken into?
Two molecules of Pyruvate
What are the 2 stages of Glycolysis?
Energy Investment Stage and Energy Payoff Stage
What net gain of ATP does glycolysis have?
2
What do dehydrogenase enzymes do?
Remove hydrogen ions from the substrate along with high energy electrons
Where are the hydrogen ions and electrons passed to?
The coenzyme NAD, in the citric acid cycle that then forms NADH
Where does the citric acid cycle take place?
The matrix of the mitochondria
Does citric acid cycle require oxygen?
Yea
What is pyruvate converted to?
Acetyl
What does Acetyl combine with?
Coenzyme A
What does Acetyl and Coenzyme A form?
Acetyl Coenzyme A
