3.1.11 - Electrode Potentials and Cells Flashcards
Standard Hydrogen Electrode (SHE)
The measuring standard for half-cell potentials. It has a cell potential of 0V, measured under standard conditions
Standard Conditions for SHE
Solutions of 1.0 mol dm^-3 conc, temp of 298k, 100kPa pressure
SHE consists of…
Hydrochloric acid, hydrogen gas and uses platinum electrode. Useful as they are metallic so will conduct electricity but are also inert so will not interfere with the reactions
Negative cell potential
substances are more easily oxidised and will lose electrons - better reducing agents
Positive cell potentials
substances are more easily reduced and will gain electrons - better oxidising agents
Effects of Concentration on EMF
increasing conc of solutions makes the cell EMF more positive
Effects of pressure on EMF
increasing pressure of cell will make the cell EMF more negative
