3.1 Location, function and skeletal structure of the larynx Flashcards
The laryngeal skeleton is made up of how many cartliges?
9
3 paired (left and right):
Arytenoid ,Corniculate, Cuneiform cartilages
3 unpaired:
Thyroid, Cricoid cartilage, Epiglottis.
What structure is A?
Epiglottic cartilage is a leaf shaped cartilage attached to the posterior tongue, it covers the laryngeal opening during swallowing.
What structure is B?
The thyroid cartilage is the largest cartilage, it articulates with cricoid cartilage and attaches to the hyoid bone via a membrane.
What structure is C?
Cricoid cartilage is the most inferior cartilage, it attaches to the first tracheal cartilage via a membrane.
What structures are indicated by D?
The paired arytenoid cartilages attach to the superoposterir surface of the cricoid cartilage.
Identify the structures at E?
The paired corniculate cartilages attach to the superior surface of the arytenoid cartilages.
What are the paired, small cartilaginous nodules that are found inside the aryepiglottic fold?
The Cuneiform cartilages.
Identify A, B and D on the thyroid cartilage.
A- Superior Horn/cornu
B- Inferior Horn/cornu
D- Thyroid Notch
Identify C, E and F on the thyroid cartilage:
C- Oblique Line
E- Angle of Thyroid
F- Lamina
Identify the processes at A and B on the cricoid cartilage:
A - muscular process
B - Vocal process
