1.3 Nerves of the Head and Neck Flashcards
Name the two major components of the nervous system:
Central nervous system (CNS)
Peripheral nervous system
Describe the peripherial nervous system:
(PNS) is made up of the spinal and cranial nerves.
The PNS is made up of bundles of nerve axons and dendrites, forming nerves. The PNS also includes sensory receptors and ganglia. Nerves travel between the CNS and all the structures of the body and communicate information.
Describe the Central nervous system (CNS)
Central nervous system (CNS) – made up of the brain and spinal cord. This is the central integration system, where all sensory information is received and perceived, and motor information is initiated.
Which information travels towards the brain?
Sensory/Motor
Sensory information travels along nerves to the brain. Each nerve in the body contains a range of types of nerve fibres carrying different types of information, some of which will be travelling towards the brain (sensory) and some of which will be travelling away from the brain (motor).
Cranial nerves are p______n ______that i_______ the head and neck.
Cranial nerves are peripherial nerves that innervate the head and neck.
There are ___ pairs of cranial nerves that attach to the base of the brain.
