3.1 Cable Types, Features, and Purposes Flashcards
Explain basic cable types, features, and their purposes.
What are the different type of Ethernet cables?
Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6, Plenum, Shielded twisted pair, Unshielded twisted pair, 568A/B
What type of cable does Fios use?
Fiber
What type of cable does broadband use?
Coaxial
What is an unshielded twisted pair Ethernet cable?
It is the specified cabling for 10/100/1000 Base T and is the predominant cabling system used today. Twisted pair cabling consists of AWG 22-26 gauge wire twisted together into color-coded pairs.
What is a CAT 1 cable used for?
A Standard telephone line.
What was CAT 5 designed for?
Designed for 100-Mbps networks.
What was CAT 5e designed for?
Enhanced from CAT 5 to handle 1000 Mbps networks.
What was CAT 6 designed for?
Supports 1000 Mbps networks at 100 meter segments; 10 Gbps networks up to 55 meter segments.
What is a shielded twisted pair Ethernet cable?
It consists of twisted pairs of wires surrounded by shielding to protect them from EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). STP is rare because there is little to no need for it.
What does 100 Base T require as a minimum to run?
It requires at least CAT 5 to run.
What is Plenum?
Plenum is the space in the ceiling, walls, and floor where special plenum-grade (fire-retardant) network cables can be run out of sight.
What is 568A/B
It is a specification established by the Telecommunication Industry Association (TIA).
What connector does CAT 5, 5e, and 6 use?
RJ - 45
Explain what 10/100/1000 BaseT is.
It is an ether net cabling system designed to run on twisted pair cabling at 10, 100, and 1000 Mbps respectively. 100 BaseT is commonly referred to as “Fast Ethernet”. 1000 BaseT is commonly referred to as “Gigabit Ethernet”.
What is a Fiber Optic cable?
It is a high speed cable for transmitting data. made of high purity glass sealed within an opaque tube. It is much faster than conventional copper wire such as coaxial cable. Most common connectors include ST, SC, and LC.
What is a coaxial cable?
It is a cable in which an internal conductor is surrounded by another, outer conductor, thus sharing the same axis. Identifiable by the little needle in the center of the round circle.
What are the most common types of video cables?
VGA, HDMI, Mini-HDMI, Display Port, DVI (DVI-D/DVI-I)
What are the characteristics of a VGA connector?
It is a 15-pin, 3 row, D-type monitor connector. It goes by other names such as D-shell, D-sub-miniature, DB-15, DE15, and HD15.
