1.3 Features Of Laptops Flashcards
Given a scenario, use appropriate laptop features.
What does “FN” stand for on a laptop keyboard?
FN = Function (for function keys)
Explain what an FN key is used for, and how it is typically used.
Typically, an FN key (function key) is held down, while tapping on another key on the keyboard. Certain keys have multiple functions. For example, the “scroll” key could have an additional highlighted word under it that says “game mode”. In order to use that keys game mode function, you must hold down the FN key to utilize that feature.
What are some typical functions an FN key may be used for?
Dual displays, wireless (on/off), cellular (on/off), volume settings, screen brightness, Bluetooth (on/off), keyboard back light, touch pad (on/off), screen orientation, media options (fast forward/rewind etc.), GPS (on/off), airplane mode.
Explain what a docking station is.
Docking stations are used to extend the functionality of light-weight portable laptops so that it is more of a desktop replacement, for use at home. Docking stations provide additional ports as well as slots for inserting modules such as hard disk or a CDROM drive. A docking station typically support devices like: hard drive bays, optical drive bays, keyboard/mouse connectors (PS/2 ports), additional USB ports, PC Card slots, external display connectors, and others.
Explain what a port replicator is.
Usually, a notebook computer will have limited I/O ports due to compact design. A port replicator provides additional I/O ports for adding additional devices such as a printer or a scanner. You can attach a laptop to a port replicator to provide much needed additional ports. The primary difference between a docking station and a port replicator is that the former will have both additional ports as well as bays to insert additional (spare) components whereas the latter will have only additional ports.
Explain laptop locks.
Laptop locks can be physical locks, or cable locks. A cable lock is most commonly used. Google “laptop cable lock” to see a picture. Laptop locks are used to PHYSICALLY secure the laptop in place, and to prevent it from being stolen.
Explain rotating and removable screens.
These screen types allow you to turn your laptop into a tablet-like device. When locked into position, you will be able to use the laptop as if it were a tablet, including the use of a touch screen and stylus pen.
