3 Medical Mathematics: Introduction to Statistics (not done) Flashcards
What is Population?
Is an entire group of elements (observations) that have at least one thing in common such as the GPA of all students
What is a Sample?
Is a small group of elements selected from the total population such as the GPA of a student in one class
What is a Parameter?
A characteristic of a population
What is a Statistic?
A characteristic of a sample
What is Data?
Is a collection of numbers (scores or measurements)
What is Qualitative data?
is non-numeric data in narrative form
What is Quantitative data?
Is numeric data.
What is Measurement?
Assigning numbers to observations according to rules
What is a Variable?
A measured characteristic that can have various values or levels
What is Discrete variables?
Have only certain values (whole numbers)
What is Continuous variables?
Can have any value either whole numbers or whole numbers and fractions (accuracy of measurement)
What is Descriptive statistics?
Is a way of summarizing data such as when one number represents a group of numbers. Tables and graphs also can be used to summarize data
SUMMARIZING DATA
- Tabular representation of data
- Graphical representation of data
- Numerical representation of data
Tabular Representation of Data
- Frequency distribution
- Cumulative frequency distribution
- Grouped frequency distribution
- Cumulative grouped frequency distribution
Cumulative Frequency Distribution can be created from?
Can be created from a frequency distribution by adding and additional column called “cumulative frequency”.
What is a histogram?
A histogram is similar to the bar graph but is used to represent data at the ratio or interval level of measurement, while the bar graph is used to represent the data at the nominal or ordinal level of measurement.
What is a bar graph?
A bar graph is used to represent the data at the nominal or ordinal level.
The bars are separated by a space.
What is Median?
The middle value when the number of data is odd and the mean of the middle two
values when the number of data is even
What is Mode?
The most frequent value (there may be more than one mode or no mode)
What is range?
The range is the difference between the highest score and the lowest score plus 1 for whole number data
What is variance?
The variance is used to measure the deviation of the individual scores from the mean.
The variance is the average squared deviation of the scores from the mean
What is standard deviation?
The standard deviation is the square root of the average squared deviation of the scores from the mean.
The standard deviation is the square root of the variance.
What is Statistics?
Is the science of assembling, classifying, tabulating, and analyzing data of a numerical kind so as to present significant information about a given subject
