2A.3 THE PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Flashcards
Characteristics of the spinal cord?
- 2 enlarged areas with a greater number of neurons for limb innervation:
1) Cervical enlargement:
> Cervical plexus
> Brachial plexus’
2) Lumbar enlargement:
> Lumbar plexus
> Sacral plexus
- Ends at - L1/L2 at Conus Medullaris
- Remaining structure of nerves is termed the Cauda Equina (horse’s tail)
what spinal cord structure contains only motor neurons?
ventral root
what spinal cord structure contains only sensory neurons?
dorsal root
What spinal cord structure contains the cell body of sensory neurons?
Dorsal root ganglion
What spinal structure contains both sensory and motor neurons but goes through the intervertebral foramen?
spinal nerve
what spinal structure has sensory and motor neurons and includes autonomics (most named nerves)?
Ventral rami
what spinal structure has sensory and motor neurons but is to deep back & has z joints (smaller branches)?
Dorsal rami
