2.5 Reasoning with Properties Flashcards
Properties of Equality
Let a, b, and c be real numbers
Addition Property of Equality
If a = b, then a + c = b + c
Subtraction Property of Equality
If a = b, then a - c = b - c
Multiplication Property of Equality
If a = b, then a • c = b • c
Division Property of Equality
If a = b and c doesn’t equal 0, then a/c = b/c
Reflexive Property of Equality
For any real number a, a = a
Symmetric Property of Equality
If a = b, then b = a
Transitive Property of Equality
If a = b and b = c, then a = c
Substitution Property of Equality
If a = b, then a may be substituted for b in any equation or expression
Distributive Property
Combining like terms
Reflexive Property of Congruence
Any geometric object that is congruent to itself
Symmetric Property of Congruence
If one geometric object is congruent to a second object, then the second object is congruent to the first object
Transitive Property of Congruence
If one geometric object is congruent to a second geometric object and the second geometric object is congruent to a third object, then the first object is congruent to the third object
