1941 law that authorized the president to aid any nation whose defense he believed was vital to American security.
Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor
December 7, 1941- Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii that led to the U.S. entering World War Two.
Battle of Midway
June 1942 World War II battle between the United States and Japan. This was the turning point in the war in the Pacific Ocean as the U.S. sunk four Japanese aircraft carriers.
Dwight D. Eisenhower
American General who began in North Africa and later became the Commander of Allied forces in Europe.
rationing
Restricting the amount of food and other goods people may buy during wartime to assure adequate supplies for the military.
Internment of Japanese Americans
Forced relocation and incarceration in camps in the interior of the U.S. of between 110,000 and 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry who had lived on the Pacific coast.
Rosie the Riveter
A propaganda character designed to increase production of female workers in the factories. It became a rallying symbol for women to do their part.
Victory Gardens
Gardens that citizens planted to raise their own vegetables so that other foods could be sent to the troops.
Liberty Bonds
American citizens were lending money to the government to pay for the war.
United Nations (UN)
An organization of independent states formed in 1945 to promote international peace and security. This replaced the League of Nations.
