MANIA
The causes of World War One. M- militarism, A- alliances, N- nationalism, I- imperialism and A- assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife by a Serbian.
stalemate
A deadlock in which neither side is able to defeat the other.
propaganda
Ideas spread to influence public opinion for or against a cause.
Trench Warfare
A type of combat in which opposing troops fight from trenches facing each other. It is defensive and the area between the trenches was called “No Man’s Land.”
Triple Alliance
An alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy in the years before World War One.
Triple Entente
A military alliance between Great Britain, France, and Russia in the years before World War I.
Central Powers of World War One
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and Ottoman Empire.
Allies of World War One
France, Britain, and Russia, and later Japan and Italy. The Allies fought the Central Powers in World War I. The United States joined the Allies in 1917.
Lusitania
British passenger ship carrying some Americans that sunk off the coast of Ireland in 1915 by German U-Boats killing 1,198 people. American were angry that passenger ship was sunk. The U.S. didn’t enter the war after this event because Germany said it would stop unrestricted submarine warfare.
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
A policy that the Germans announced on January 1917 which stated that their submarines would sink any ship in the British waters.

Germany sent this to Mexico instructing an ambassador to convince Mexico to go to war with the U.S. It was intercepted and caused the U.S. to go to war with Germany and the Central Powers.
Reasons why the U.S. entered World War One in 1917
-Germany started using unrestricted sub warfare again.
-Zimmerman Note/Telegram.
-Make sure Allies could repay the loans the U.S. made to them.
-“Make the world safe for democracy.”
