U.S. troops led by Col. Custer were killed by Native Americans in present-day Montana.
Dawes Act (1887)
An attempt to make Native Americans start farming on Great Plains reservations by giving land to Native American men. Many Native Americans either sold the land or didn’t farm.
Wounded Knee Massacre (1890)
U.S. troops killed over 200 Native Americans in present-day South Dakota. This event marked the end of the Indian Wars in the west.
