Panama Canal Zone
A ten-mile wide strip of land on which was built a canal. It’s construction drastically reduced the time it took for commercial(trading) and naval vessels to sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans.
Gunboat Diplomacy
Diplomacy in which the U.S. threatened to use force in order to obtain its objectives.
Malaria and Yellow Fever
Diseases carried by mosquitoes that had to be dealt with during the construction for the Panama Canal.
“Big Stick Policy”
Refers to U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy “To speak softly and carry a big stick.”
Roosevelt Corollary
Roosevelt’s 1904 extension of the Monroe Doctrine stating that the United States has the right to protect its economic interests in South And Central America by using military force.
Francisco “Pancho” Villa
Mexican revolutionary leader who raided the U.S. and led to the death of 18 Americans. U.S. troops searched for him in Mexico, but never caught him.
Isthmus
A narrow strip of land connecting two larger land areas.
Dollar Diplomacy
Foreign policy created by President Taft that had the U.S. exchanging financial support ($) for the right to “help” countries make decisions about trade. Basically it was exchanging money for political influence in Latin America and the Caribbean
Great White Fleet
1907-1909 - President Theodore Roosevelt sent the Navy on a world tour to show the world the U.S. naval power.
