Characteristics of Urine

A
  • Color and Transparency - Should be clear and pale yellow to amber (from urochrome) in color. Deeper the color the more solutes. Cloudy may indicate an infection
  • Odor - normally slightly ammonia-like odor. Some drugs, vegetables, and various disease processes alter the oder.
  • pH - range from 4.5-8.0
  • Specific Gravity - the weight of urine compared to distilled water (1ml weighs 1g). Urine can range from 1.001 (diluted) to 1.030 (more solutes) Second largest component of urine is urea. Nitrogenous wastes in the urine is urea, uric acid, and creatinine
