2.3 Study Guide Flashcards
What happens during stage 1 of demographic transition?
Birth rate: High
Death rate: High
Population Growth rate: Stable or slow increase
What happens during stage 2 of demographic transition?
Birth rate: High
Death rate: Falls rapidly
Population Growth rate: Rapid increase
What happens during stage 3 of demographic transition?
Birth rate: Falling
Death rate: Falls more slowly
Population Growth rate: Increase slows down
What happens during stage 4 of demographic transition?
Birth rate: Low
Death rate: Low
Population Growth rate: Falling then stable
What happens during stage 5 of demographic transition?
Birth rate: Rising or falling (little change)
Death rate: Low
Population Growth rate: Little change
Characteristics of Developing Countries:
Demographic Transition:
Stage Two
High Birth Rate with a Rapidly Falling death rate
Rapid Increase in Population Growth Rate
Very low GDP per capita averages (Ex: Mozambique: $608.44 per capita)
Low life expectancy (Ex: Mozambique: 59.63 years)
High infant mortality rate (caused by lack of health care), low literacy rates, low CO2 emissions (lacks industrial development), low amount of freshwater withdrawal, high percent of people who cannot afford a healthy diet, and low average ecological footprint.
Characteristics of Developed Countries:
Demographic Transition:
Stage 4 or 5:
Birth rate: Low to stable
Death rate: Low
Population Growth Rate: Falling, stable, little change
High GDP, high life expectancy, very low infant mortality rate, high literacy rates, very high CO2 emissions, annual fresh water withdrawal varies from average to massive, low percent of people who cannot afford a healthy diet, and massive ecological footprint per person.
How can an age structure diagram be used to predict population growth?
A population will grow if the majority of the men and women are between the ages of 0 and 44. This range is the pre-reproductive and reproductive groups. If there are lots of people in this range, then there will be more individuals that can produce children, which will help grow the population.
If an age structure diagram looks like a pyramid, with a wide base that gets smaller as you near the top, then the diagram shows population growth in the future.
If the age structure diagram has relatively the same width throughout most of the diagram and narrows at the very top, then the diagram shows low population growth.
If an age structure diagram has a large width at the top and gets more narrow at the bottom, then the diagram shows negative population growth.
If an age structure diagram is wide at the base and narrows as it goes to the top, what kind of population growth is shown?
High population growth
How do the population growth rates of the United States and Mozambique compare?
The population growth rate of the United States is stable, while the population growth rate of Mozambique is rapidly increasing.
How do the birth rates of the U.S. and Mozambique compare?
The U.S. has a low and falling birth rate, while Mozambique has a falling birth rate that is very high.
How does the GDP per capita of Mozambique compare to that of the United States?
Mozambique: $608.44
United States: $81,695.19
How does the average ecological footprint of Mozambique compare to that of the United States?
Mozambique: 24 million global rectares
United States: 2.6 billion global rectares
How does the infant mortality rate of Mozambique compare to that of the United States?
Mozambique: 48.7 per 1000 births
United States: 5.4 per 1000 births
