2.3 Nucleic Acids Flashcards
What are purines?
Doubled ringed structures
Adenine and Guanine
What are pyrimidines?
Single ringed structures
Thymine and Cytosine
What is the semi conservative model?
Two double helix structures are created each containing a parent and daughter strand
What is the type of bond between a nitrogenous base and a pentose sugar?
Glycosidic
What is the type of bond between a phosphate and a pentose sugar?
Phosphodiester
What enzymes are used during DNA replication?
Gyrase Helicase Primase DNA Polymerase DNA Ligase
What is the job of Gyrase?
Unwinds DNA
What is the job of Helicase?
Unzips Helix by breaking the weak hydrogen bonds
What is the job of Primase?
Signals where the nucleotides should be added
What is the job of DNA Polymerase?
Adds the nucleotides
What is the job of DNA Ligase?
Sticks the lagging strands Okazaki fragments
What is meant by anti-parallel?
One side is flipped from the other (5 prime to 3 prime and vice versa)
What way is the leading strand?
5 prime to 3 prime
What are Okazaki fragments?
Primase have to wait on lagging strand as can only travel in a 5 to 3 direction
