22.4 Entropy Flashcards
what is entropy?
measure of the dispersal of energy within the chemicals in a chemical system
what is the order of states in increasing entropy?
solid
liquid
gas
what happens to the entropy when:
solid —> liquid
increases
as the randomness of the particles has increased
what happens to the entropy when:
liquid —> gas
increases
as the randomness of the particles has increased
what happens to the entropy when:
liquid —> solid
decreases
as the randomness of the particles has decreased
why does entropy increase going from liquid to gas?
because the particles are more spread out and random meaning the energy is more spread out
what happens to the entropy when the moles of gas increase in a reaction?
i.e more moles of gas in products than reactants
it increases
because more gas means more randomness and disorder so greater entropy
what is the standard entropy?
entropy of one mole of a substance under standard conditions
how do you calculate entropy change?
products - reactants
