22.2 Enthalpy changes in solution Flashcards
what happens when a salt dissolves in water?
the giant ionic lattice is broken up and the ionic bonds are overcome
what is the standard enthalpy of solution?
energy change when one mole of a solute is dissolved in a solvent (solid to aqueous)
how does water dissolve solutes?
its polar so its delta negative oxygen attracts positive ions while its delta positive hydrogen attracts negative ions
what is the bonding in NaCl (s)?
giant ionic lattice with strong ionic bonds
what is the bonding in NaCl (aq)?
ionic are separate but now surrounded by water molecules
what mass should you use in solution calculations?
the mass of the water + solute
because the solute is dissolved in the water so is also being heated up
what happens to a solid ionic compound when dissolved in water?
the ionic lattice breaks up
water molecules are attracted to the ions
what is the enthalpy change of hydration?
energy change when one mole of gaseous ions are dissolved in water to form one mole of aqueous ions
(gas to aqueous)
