When a parent/guardian of a dependant child under 18 is uncared for due to arrest, hospitalization or death, ACS will be notified for
- transportation is required for the child
- child is left in care of relative or friend
When attention is drawn to an apparently lost child,
UMOS will notify DO and radio, make inquiry in vicinity, bring child to command if relative not located and prepare aided report.
DO will telephone MPS and give description. Complete captions on aided. Have female UMOS watch child if available. Notify youth officer. If child still not claimed, notify ACS to provide transport to shelter. If not available assign female UMOS to escort child to shelter. If female not available use another UMOS. Inform MPS that child is moved to another location. If suspected abuse, neglect, maltreatment or abandonment, DO prepares report of suspected abuse or maltreatment form. Notify PDU if 11 or older. Notify SVD if under 11.
Patrol supervisor will direct member to take child into protective custody without permission if reasonable cause to believe that continued presence of child in the home is
- imminently dangerous to life or health
- there is not sufficient time to apply for a court order
Patrol supervisor will direct UMOS to serve “Notice - temporary removal of child and right to hearing” on parent/guardian without court order. If not present, copy of notice will be affixed to door and mailed within 24 hrs.
UMOS will notify ACS IRT Coordinator whenever a child is
- child removed from a household by police personnel
- an arrest is made in connection with the abuse or neglect of a child
Who telephones state registry with facts in regards to removal of a child?
Desk officer. If state registry refuses to accept a case, enter the time and name of person contacted in telephone record.
Who obtains the state registry number and enters it on “report of suspected child abuse or maltreatment?

They will always take child in protective custody even if arrest is not made.
Deliver child to family court if in session.
Upon determining that a child has run away from home
UMOS will take child into custody and remove to command. Prepare aided, juvenile report and complaint report. Forward aided to MPS. Notify Youth officer.
Desk officer/counterpart interview child and notify MPS in all cases. Contact parent or person legally responsible for child to pick up hold. Arrange for shelter if unable to release child to parent or guardian or child maybe endangered.
At what age is a child in runaway procedure?
Under the age of 16.
When a child or minor requires shelter, UMOS will
