Median Cubital Vein
Vein found on the inside of the elbow commonly used for drawing blood. Easy to see and feel.
Tourniquet
Bands that are tied around an arm or leg when bleeding is uncontrollable due to a severe wound like a gunshot, stabbing, or heavy machinery accident.
Phlebotomist
A medical professional trained to draw blood from people.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A blood test that is run as part of a routine exam. Looks at white blood cells (WBC), red blood cells (RBC), hemoglobin (HB/Hgb), hematocrit (HCT), platelets.
Hemoglobin
Protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
Hematocrit
The percentage by volume of red blood cells in your blood.
Anemia
Not having enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin to transport blood to body tissues.
Hypoxia
A state in which oxygen in not available in sufficient quantities at the tissue level to maintain adequate homeostasis.
Leukemia
Cancer of the body’s blood forming tissues, including the bone marrow and lymphatic system.
Infection
The invasion and growth of germs in the body.
Dehydration
Caused by not drinking enough fluid or by losing more fluid than you take in.
Blood Smear
A blood test that gives information about the number and shape of its blood cells.
Lipid Panel
A blood test that can measure the amount of cholesterol and triglycerides in blood.
Cholesterol
A waxy substance found in the blood used to build healthy cells.
Triglycerides
A type of fat, it has one glycerol and three fatty acids.
