no, it’s voluntary- but it makes products much more appealing and many companies choose to only work with others that conform with BSI standards
what does the presence of the CE mark mean?
- product conforms to (relevant) European safety standards
- it is mandatory within the EU
what is RoHS?
- Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive
- aims to prevent hazardous substances entering production process to prevent damage to human health & environment
- required within the EU
what is the battery directive?
- covers all products in which a battery is used
- deals with safe disposal
- limits mercury content to 0.0005%
- limits volume of cadmium to 0.002%
- also includes cordless power tools
- requires the crossed out wheelie bin to be displayed
what is used as an internationally recognised symbol for recycling?
- mobius loop
- may include a SPI (society of plastics industry) code to state what polymer is used
EU packaging & packaging waste directive
- covers all areas of packaging (commercial, household, etc)
- at least 60% ( by weight) of packaging must be recovered/incinerated
- all packaging must be clearly marked with specific materials
- all member states must ensure all new packaging complies with:
> keep weight & volume to a minimum
> reduce hazardous substances used
> design reusable/recoverable packaging

- products made from timber, paper, other forest products
- sourced for well-managed forests and/or recycled materials
- FSC forests protect wildlife & people who live there
- workers must be local & trained & paid fairly
- when trees are harvested they must be replaced/ allowed to regenerate
EU energy star
- standardise how IT equipment labelled to show energy used
- products assessed on power usage when idle & in sleep mode
- database allows customers to make informed decisions
- covers: computers, displays, imaging equipment (eg printers, scanners, projectors)
