205.2 Define and state the purpose of the following:

A

a. Premise Router - connection point for each NOC to the DISN network.
b. OSSR – Outer Security Screening Router provides security filtering for outside the firewalls and load balancing for the Bastion Hosts via VLAN with ISSR.
c. ISSR – Inner Security Screening Router provides security filtering inside the firewalls and load balancing for the Bastion Hosts via VLAN with OSSR.
d. VSCAN – Scans inbound and outbound emails and attachments for viruses.
e. DNS Mail Server – DNS and Email (SMTP) store and forwarding services.
f. Fleet Router - connects NOC to the fleet.

205.3 Explain each of the following:

A

a. 1. Print Server - A print server is a computer or device that is connected to one or more printers and to client computers over a network, and can accept print jobs from the computers and send the jobs to the appropriate printers.
b. 2. File Server – A file server is a computer attached to a network that has the primary purpose of providing a location for shared disk access, i.e. shared storage of computer files (such as documents, sound files, photographs, movies, images, databases, etc.) that can be accessed by the workstations that are attached to the computer network.
c. 3. Mail Server - A mail server is an application that receives incoming e-mail from local users (people within the same domain) and remote senders and forwards outgoing e-mail for delivery via Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP).
d. 4. DNS Server - A Domain Naming translates IP addresses into domain names.
e. 5. Web Server - A web server is a computer program that delivers (serves) content, such as web pages, using the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), over the World Wide Web.

205.4 Define and state the purpose of a VLAN:

A
  • A Virtual Local Area Network is a group of hosts with a common set of requirements that communicate as if they were attached to the same broadcast domain, regardless of their physical location. Network reconfiguration can be done through software instead of physically relocating devices, so the purpose of a VLAN is to save money on resources.

205.5 Define and state the purpose of RAID:

A
  • Redundant Array of Independent Disks is a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in combination for fault tolerance and performance. RAID allows you to store the same data redundantly (in multiple places) in a balanced way to improve overall performance.

205.6 Define and state the purpose of a Modem:

A
  • A modem is a device that converts data from digital to analog format for transmission on analog transmission lines, and also converts data in analog format to digital format for computer processing.

205.8 Discuss the following IT21 FLTNOC’s multi-layered support concepts:

A
    1. Tier One - Provide 24/7 by the active duty Watch section. This support includes troubleshooting ship-to-shore and intra-NOC communications and acts as the primary resource for IT-21 FLTNOC operations.
    1. Tier Two - System Administrators are responsible for the providing the highest state of operational readiness and availability of the IT-21 FLTNOC to the Fleet.
    1. Tier Three - Provided by the Fleet systems Engineering Team (FSET) engineers which provide specialized system technical support, engineering assistance, and on site training for all NCTAMS/NCTS personnel.
    1. Tier Four - SPAWARSYSCEN Charleston acts as the primary engineering activity for IT-21 FLTNOC development and provides In-Service Engineering Activity (ISEA) support for the FSETs, NCTAMS, NCTS and other Fleet services.

c. Port 22 – SSH used for secure logins, file transfers and port forwarding
d. Port 23 – Telnet unencrypted text communications
e. Port 25 – SMTP used for e-mail routing between mail servers
f. Port 53 – DNS Naming Conventions
g. Port 80 – HTTP Internet Protocol, foundation of data communication over the World Wide Web
h. Port 110 - POP3 e-mail retrieval

205.11 Define the following transport mediums:

A

a. UTP - Unshielded twisted pair is a popular type of cable that consists of two unshielded wires twisted around each other. Due to its low cost, UTP cabling is used extensively for local-area networks (LANs) and telephone connections.
b. STP - Shielded Twisted Pair is similar to UTP but includes an insulating coating that functions as a ground for the wires. The extra covering in shielded twisted leaking into or out of the cable.
c. Coaxial - is a type of wire that consists of a center wire surrounded by insulation and then a grounded shield of braided wire. The shield minimizes electrical and radio frequency interference
d. Fiber Optic - A technology that uses glass (or plastic) threads (fibers) to transmit data. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves. Fiber Optics has much great bandwidth, and carries more data.

205.12State the purpose of the following:

A

a. Ping - A utility to determine whether a specific IP address is accessible. It works by sending a packet to the specified address and waiting for a reply.
b. Trace Route - A computer network tool used to show the route taken by packets across an IP network.
c. TELNET - A terminal emulation program for TCP/IP networks such as the Internet. The Telnet program runs on your computer and connects your PC to a server on the network. You can then enter commands through the Telnet program and they will be executed as if you were entering them directly on the server console. Telnet is a common way to remotely control Web servers.
d. Router - A router is a device that forwards data packets between networks.
