(2) The Reformation Parliament Flashcards
MP grievances
1529 small group of MPs brought up church failings (mainly Wolsey)
Many servants (not humble), Palaces and pluralist (Durham, York, Winchester ect) and had children
Also angry at church courts-felt they overstepped their purview (some cases should have been in King’s court)
Mortuary fees, Church held so much land peasant had none and Clergy lived lavishly and wouldn’t care for sick+poor
Wolsey
He was easy pickings since his annulment failure
Dismissed as First Minister and Chancellor
Henry summoned him on treason charges (he wanted his possessions e.g. Hampton Court) but he died on the way to London
Submission of the Clergy
Henry charged 15 churchmen of praemunire (1530)
When convocation met in 1531 it was made apparent a sum of £100,000 and recognition of H as Supreme Head would suffice to drop the charges
Convocation was weak from Wolsey’s fall so they accepted and 1532 Parliament act made it official
Supplication against the Ordinaries
Petition passed by Commons in 1532
List of complaints of the clergy - namely that the church grew rich off the laity’s expense
They also disliked how the clergy set mortuary fees according to the family’s wealth and false charges of heresy
Act to Remove the Annates
Sought to attack Rome’s finances - removed payments of Annates 1532 (not a large sum but the act was more of a statement
Henry was present for the voting on the act to ensure support
William Warham
Archbishop of Canterbury and papal supporter throughout
He refused to help H get a divorce but his death in 1532 opened great possibilities for H
Anne Boleyn
She had refused Henry’s advances unlike her sister Mary
This kept H keen and finally in 1532 although Francis refused to formally meet the pair his formal welcoming of H was enough to allow them to finally sleep together for first time in Calais
Without French support he couldn’t marry Anne as neither S nor F would support him then (bad position)
1533 Cranmer secretly married them (Pope had name Cranmer as new ArchB of Canterbury) and she was immediately pregnant
Act for the Restraints of Appeals
1533 - all appeals to the Pope from anywhere in the Empire banned
King is the end of all matters as England now an Empire
Immediately convocation ruled Pope could not annul marriage only the convocation court could
1534 Acts
Act forbidding Papal dispensation and payment of Peters Pence - prevented annual tax payment to Rome
First act of succession - H+C marriage invalid, Mary illegitimate and Anne children+marriage=valid
Any who denied succession were to be tried with treason and all must take oath
Act of Supremacy
1534 - H=Supreme Head
King had rights to claim First fruit and tenths
Treason to call monarch a heretic
Officially started using Supreme title as of 1535 Jan
